Checking and Improving the Wi-Fi Strength in your Garage.

So you’re thinking about getting a Wi-Fi garage door opener, but you are not sure if your home Wi-Fi signal will reach your garage or if you may experience glitches in the garage’s Wi-Fi connectivity from time to time.

When making this purchasing decision, one important step to take is to check the Wi-Fi signal strength in your garage prior to the opener installation to determine if additional steps are needed to connect your new Wi-Fi garage door opener.

Check the Wi-Fi Strength First
Here is a simple way to check the Wi-Fi signal strength in your garage:

1. Hold a mobile device that is connected to your home Wi-Fi network in the location where your garage door opener will be installed.

2. Check the Wi-Fi signal strength displayed on the mobile device.

3. The quantity of bars on your mobile device will determine whether or not you will be able to connect your Wi-Fi successfully.

There are three major things that can affect the range of your Wi-Fi network and cause limited or no Wi-Fi signal in your garage:

1. Strength of the router’s Wi-Fi signal
2. Obstructions, including walls
3. Interference from nearby appliances

A Wi-Fi extender can help bridge the gap between network connectivity issues that you are having with your devices. Essentially, it is a repeater that extends the signal using its own broadcast capability.

Make sure.
When installing a Wi-Fi extender, it can not only strengthen your internet connection, but it can also extend the Wi-Fi beyond other areas of your home or business. Chron recommends employing a proper wireless security protocol such WPA or WPA2 [note, we recommend only WPA2 for best security] to protect your network from outside intrusion when installing these devices.

1)  Move your router closer to the garage door opener to minimize interference from walls and other objects. When it comes to the garage, it is easy to view it as an additional room used to store anything and everything that cannot fit in other rooms in your home, but when it comes to Wi-Fi range effectiveness, having too many items in your garage can cause major interference with not only the connection from the internet but also the connection between your opener’s remote controls as well.

Check out the video below for details on how to effectively do this.

2)   If you cannot completely relocate your router closer to the garage, ensure that the router is out in the open and not within or behind a cabinet.  The higher the router is within the room or the home will help the router to achieve a longer Wi-Fi distance.

3)  If you find that your Wi-Fi connection is not reaching its optimal performance, you can Add a Wi-Fi range extender to your home network.

A Wi-Fi extender can help bridge the gap between network connectivity issues that you are having with your devices. Essentially, it is a repeater that extends the signal using its own broadcast capability.
