Whether you’re a new or veteran runner, you know that there are a handful of must-haves for you to be prepared in making the most of your time on the go.

We’ve compiled a list of eight simple must-haves for every runner…

FOR STARTERS

Running ShoesProper footwear is the no. 1 thing you need for runners. Without proper shoes, you can end up injured and stray away from your daily exercise. Go to a local specialty running store in your area and make sure the salesperson watches you walk barefoot, walk in the shoes and then run in the shoes to help determine if you are choosing the right pair.

Foam Roller

Even if you’re running 2-3 miles per run, there’s a lot of stress put on your body, especially on new runners. Foam rollers are the go-to for a self massage and is beneficial in releasing muscle tightness or knots, and therefore can help prevent injury.

FOR CONVENIENCE

Distance Tracker

This is a gimme. To know how far you run and what your pace is, you will need to track it somehow. There are many apps you can use on your phone such as RunKeeper, or you can get a smart watch or wristband like FitBit.

The Perfect Music Playlist

When picking the perfect playlist for your run, it is all about pairing your pace with your favorite songs. Generally, you will need at least 10 songs on the playlist, but to avoid listening to the same songs for every run, add 20-30 more depending on the duration of your run.

An Easy Exit and Entry Through the Garage

When you’re about to go for a run, you’ll want to make sure you have all of the above. The last thing you want to have to grab is something else bulky like your car keys. Instead, pick up the LiftMaster Mini Universal Remote Control. With just a simple and convenient push of a button, you can securely leave and enter your house through the garage when you need to get up and go, even if you don’t have a LiftMaster garage door opener.

FOR SAFETY

Sunscreen

While it might be nice to get out during the day for a lunch run, during the summer it’s best to run in the early morning or evening, when the sun’s rays aren’t as strong. No matter what time of the day, or whether the skies are sunny or overcast, you should always wear sunscreen. Use a sunscreen with at least 30 SPF, and apply the sunscreen 20 minutes before heading out the door to ensure it’s absorbed into the skin.

Reflective gear and lights

If you’re a night time runner and enjoy the cool night breeze before bed, take a few extra precautions so you stay safe. Along with the best practice of wearing light-colored clothing, wear lights and/or reflective gear for an additional safety measure.

Headlamps, knuckle lights or flashlights help you see the ground in front of you so you don’t fall or trip, and reflective gear such as wrist bands, vests or a belt increase your visibility with oncoming cars along the road.

Handheld water bottle

With the summer’s heat, humidity and or the duration of your run, drinking water is necessary. Pick up a handheld water bottle that can suffice for your workout and is easy to keep with you.

It is recommended that you carry 20-40 ounces of water per hour, and when you run, be sure to sip it every five to 10 minutes rather than taking long drinks at a time.
